Knitting & Crocheting🃏🧶
This week, we picked up our knitting needles again and crochet hooks for the very first time at The Swan NS, and what an exciting start it has been! Students have been learning the basics of these wonderful crafts, from mastering simple stitches to creating their very first loops and patterns.
With plenty of enthusiasm (and a few tangled yarns along the way!), everyone is enjoying the chance to develop new skills, patience, and creativity. Knitting and crocheting are not only fantastic ways to express ourselves but also help with focus, coordination, and relaxation.
A big thank you to Alice & Marion who have been guiding us through the process. We can’t wait to see what wonderful creations our students will make in the coming weeks—maybe scarves, small toys, or even a class project!🪡🧣
Agri Aware's Incredible Edibles 🌱🍓🥕
Our students have been getting their hands dirty in the best way possible as we begin our journey with Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles! This exciting programme links perfectly with our SESE and Science curriculum, helping children learn about food growth, healthy eating, and sustainability through hands-on experience.
For Task 1, we rolled up our sleeves and got straight to work sowing a variety of fruits and vegetables in our school garden beds. The children carefully planted seeds for strawberries, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, and more, learning about what each plant needs to grow strong and healthy. We discussed the importance of soil, water, and sunlight, and everyone is now eagerly waiting to see the first signs of sprouting.
This project is a fantastic way to connect with nature while developing responsibility, teamwork, and an appreciation for where our food comes from. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to care for our crops, track their growth, and complete more fun challenges as part of the programme.
We can’t wait to see our garden flourish—stay tuned for updates on our Incredible Edibles adventure! 🌿🌞🥦
Fighting Words – Our Young Authors Shine! ✍📖
On Saturday, twelve of our talented students proudly received their very own published book—the result of their hard work and creativity in the 'Fighting Words' programme at Portlaoise Library! This incredible experience was part of the 'Creative Schools' initiative, giving children the chance to explore their imagination and develop their storytelling skills in a fun and inspiring way.
As part of the programme, the students worked together to create an original story, brainstorming ideas, developing characters, and crafting a unique plot. With guidance from professional writers and illustrators, they brought their story to life, seeing it transform from an idea into a beautifully published book.
The excitement was clear as each child received their own copy on Saturday—a special keepsake to celebrate their achievement. This experience has not only encouraged a love of writing but also shown our students that their voices and ideas matter.
A huge well done to our young authors! We are so proud of their hard work and creativity, and we can’t wait to see what stories they write next. 📚✨
